HeadFirst Counseling and Heads Together- Working to End the Stigma Around Mental Health

At HeadFirst Counseling, part of the work we do is to educate people about the importance of mental health and using therapeutic services in a proactive and preventative way to increase overall wellbeing. We now know so much about how our emotional and mental health is connected not only to our physical health, but our academic performance, stress levels, and cognitive functioning. The more we are attuned to our emotions and are able to acknowledge our feelings, the better we perform in all areas of life.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry recently launched an initiative in the UK called Heads Together, which aims to change the conversation around mental health from silence and shame to optimism and support. In the initial launch speech, the Duke and Duchess, along with Prince Harry, urge people to start talking- about a problem you are having, about mental health, or having a conversation with a friend and asking how they are doing. It all begins with a conversation between two people and the connection that is created.

We are looking to do the same thing in our therapy sessions at HeadFirst. Being part of the conversation for us means truly caring about what is going on with you and listening fully. We work to remove the stigma around mental health by appreciating all parts of you, not just the part that is struggling or causing you concern. This is also why we don’t diagnose our clients- we believe this can lead to reducing the client to just their symptoms and begins to define who they are in a negative way. We have found that basing therapy off a particular diagnosis can even impede growth as it fails to look at the client holistically as an individual person with a unique set of strengths.

At HeadFirst, help comes in the form of us working to help you restore your belief in yourself and to be a support and encouragement along the way.

As part of the Dallas community, we now urge you to join the conversation and get to talking about mental health. Ask for help when you need it. Ask a friend how they are doing. Talk about a problem you are currently experiencing. Big change happens one person at a time, one conversation at a time.
