Essential Oils

HeadFirst Counseling uses essential oils as an integrative part of holistic health for children, adolescents, and parents. The essential oils at HeadFirst act as a compliment to the therapy services by targeting the child or adolescent’s emotional regulation system in the brain.

Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, and flowers of plants. Essential oils have been used throughout history for their health-promoting properties, and more recently in holistic and alternative health approaches to self-care and wellbeing.

Essential oils are used for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications to support and maintain overall health. At HeadFirst Counseling, we diffuse targeted essential oils aromatically, but offer oils to be applied topically to brain points (center of the big toe), pulse points, and reflexology points when appropriate.

Why Essential Oils for Emotional Health?

HeadFirst Counseling uses essential oils as part of integrative, holistic care to minimize symptoms of anxiety, anger, depression, irritability, frustration, grief, worry, lack of purpose, stress, and difficulty concentrating in children, adolescents, and parents.

Essential oils are beneficial in regulating emotions as the oils are able to reach the amygdala part of the brain through the olfactory bulb via the nasal cavity (amygdala is the center in the brain for emotions, emotional behavior, motivation, and the assessment of safety or threat). The nose acts as an outer extension of the brain, and inhaling essential oils is the quickest way to get healing molecules in the essential oils to the emotional center of the brain, immediately creating a positive impact on mood and emotional regulation.

Aromatic Application:

Essential oils used aromatically (either diffused in the air or applied to palms of hands and cupped over nose to inhale) affect the brain in the following ways:

  • Bind to receptors through neural olfactory pathways and influence neurotransmitters in the limbic system of the brain (emotional center)

  • Increase oxygen in the limbic part of the brain, stimulating the release of neurotransmitters

  • Influence the amygdala for emotional trauma release

Topical Application:

Apply to the skin to pulse points on the neck, occipital point at the top of the spine, and reflexology points to achieve the following:

  • Increase circulation and oxygenation in the cells

  • Penetrate tissue to aid repair

The different essential oils at HeadFirst Counseling can be used aromatically or topically to help balance or brighten changing moods.

HeadFirst Counseling uses only certified pure, therapeutic grade oils produced by doTERRA to ensure product purity, safety, and effectiveness.
